Explore the Merge Shape commands in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows. These commands allow you to create your own shapes in PowerPoint easily.
For many users, the Merge Shape commands may be assumed as a new feature in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows. However, these were available in PowerPoint 2010 for Windows through the Combine Shapes commands. Yes, these were not available by default from any of the Ribbon tabs in PowerPoint 2010, but you could customize the QAT to get these commands. In PowerPoint 2013, Microsoft gave the new Merge Shapes name to these commands and also gave them a place right within the Ribbon. And now, these commands are no longer limited to shapes as they also work with text and pictures.
Accessing the Merge Shape Commands

Learn how to highlight text in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows. Highlighted text can recreate the look of colored, transparent ink on text.
First of all, PowerPoint 2013 or any of the previous versions do not support text highlighting. And before we explore getting over this limitation, let’s ask ourselves why do we need to highlight a text? If you want to emphasize some important words within your slide, then the highlighting may indeed help. However, unlike Microsoft Word, PowerPoint doesn’t have a ready-made tool to highlight text, but you can use Word’s highlighting options as a workaround!
Follow these steps to learn how to highlight a text within PowerPoint 2013 for Windows:
Select the text on your slide, as shown in Figure 1, below. Thereafter copy (
) the selected text to the Clipboard.

bring up the Paste Options drop-down menu, as shown in Figure 3, below. Here select the Keep Source Formatting option (highlighted in
within Figure 3) to retain the text formatting from the source PowerPoint slide.

More About Highlighting in Microsoft Word 2013
We recommend that you select the text first in Word, and then choose a highlight color. Alternatively, Word lets you choose a highlight color even when no text is selected. If you do so, the cursor changes to the highlighter icon, as shown highlighted in
within Figure 6, below.

Now you can highlight text almost as if you were using a conventional highlighter pen with a piece of paper or a book. You can highlight contiguous or non-contiguous areas of text now. The latter is shown in Figure 7 below.

We recommend that you select the text first in Word, and then choose a highlight color. Alternatively, Word lets you choose a highlight color even when no text is selected. If you do so, the cursor changes to the highlighter icon, as shown highlighted inwithin, below.Now copy (
) all text back to the Clipboard. Paste (
) within your PowerPoint slide. Once you paste, you will see that the Paste Options icon appears. Now immediately press the Paste Options drop-down menu, as shown in Figure 8, below. Here select the Keep Source Formatting option (highlighted in
within Figure 8) to retain the text formatting from the source Word document.

Once done, you can copy the highlighting to other text without having to use Word again. You can also remove the highlight altogether right within PowerPoint. Both procedures are explained in our Copy and Remove Highlighting for Text in PowerPoint 2013 tutorial.Save your presentation often.

Although PowerPoint allows you to choose almost any color you want, it is often difficult to choose the same color for text as the grass or the sky in a picture on the same slide! PowerPoint 2016 for Windows Eyedropper option enables you to pick an exact color from anywhere, sometimes even from somewhere outside PowerPoint! Even better, when you are picking up the color from a source, you get to see the color preview as well as the RGB value of the color you are picking.
Follow these steps to learn how to use the Eyedropper option to copy colors for shapes:
Open or create a slide which already has text or shapes, and at least one picture, as you can see in Figure 1.
Note: The Drawing Tools Format tab is a Contextual tab. Contextual tabs are special tabs in the Ribbon that are not visible all the time. They make an appearance only when you are working with a particular slide object which can be edited using the options within these tabs.
This brings up the Shape Fill drop-down gallery, as shown in Figure 4. Within the drop-down gallery, select the Eyedropper option (see Figure 4 again).
As soon as the Eyedropper option is selected, the cursor changes to an eyedropper. Place your cursor over the color in the picture which you want to pick as a fill for your shape. As you move your cursor pointer over the color you want to pick you’ll see a Live Preview of the color beneath within a square, as you can see highlighted in blue within Figure 5.
Hold your cursor at any position for a while, and you’ll see the RGB (Red Green Blue) color coordinates and color name, as shown highlighted in blue within Figure 6.
In the same way, you can change the fill color of other shapes on the slide. Note that you can easily select multiple shapes and then apply the same fill color to all selected shapes. Figure 8, below shows different colors picked from the picture and applied to shapes as fills.
Notice that the Shape Fill drop-down gallery now shows all the picked colors under Recent Colors section (highlighted in red within Figure 9). Compare Figures 9 and 4.
Figure 11, below shows the same slide after we picked up colors for shape fills and outlines. All these colors were sourced from the picture on the slide. Compare Figures 1 and 11.
Make sure to save your presentation.

Learn how to add animation in PowerPoint 2007, 2003, and 2002 for Windows

We explained what animation is, and what guidelines you need to follow before you add an animation to a slide object in PowerPoint. You can add animation to any slide object in PowerPoint — including text, charts, shapes, pictures, clip art, etc.
Follow these steps to add animation to a shape in PowerPoint:
Open a new presentation, and insert a slide object such as a shapes or a picture, etc. Or open any existing presentation you have, and select the slide object (see Figure 1).

This opens a fly-out menu that lets you select any of the four animation types that PowerPoint provides. For this tutorial, we chose the Entrance option, which opens another fly-out menu that you can see inFigure 4.

By default, the recently used animation effects are visible in the Entrance fly-out menu. To see all the effects available, choose theMore Effect option from the fly-out menu, which opens a dialog box, as shown inFigure 5. This contains all the animation effects available in PowerPoint for the selectedanimation type.

You can add animation types other than Entrance in the same way. Just choose the relevant fly-out menu as required for Emphasis, Exit, and Motion Path animations.
Note: PowerPoint uses the term Custom Animation for animation added to slide objects. For most practical purposes, the terms “custom animation” and “animation” can be regarded the same.
Tip: If your slide has more than one slide object, you can also add animation effects for all of them using the same process. Remember that any animation added first will play first, and any animations added thereafter will play in the same sequence as you added them. Yes, you can change this sequence as explained in our Build and Sequence Animations in PowerPoint 2007 tutorial.
Now that you have added an animation to a slide object, you can control more animation properties like event and speed.
