However, if you want to type this symbol on your keyboard, keep reading.

Quick Help to Insert Delta sign in Word

The table below contains the Delta symbol you can copy and paste into your Word or Excel document. It also has the Alt code as well as the keyboard shortcut.

To type the Delta symbol (Δ) in Word using the keyboard shortcut, first, type the Alt code (0394), select this code and then press Alt+X to convert the code into a Delta symbol.

The above table contains all you need to insert this symbol into your Word document.

However, if you are not satisfied with this quick help, below is a detailed guide on how to type the Delta symbol or any other symbol in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Delta is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. The uppercase symbol for Delta is Δ and the lowercase symbol is δ.

There are some symbols readily available as second keys on the keyboard. By pressing some keys simultaneously, you can easily insert such symbols into your work.

Other symbols, however, aren’t that easy to type using the keyboard. One of these symbols is the Delta symbol ( Δ).

Typing becomes cumbersome for the typist if he or she needs to insert some of these symbols regularly into his work.

But it doesn’t have to be that difficult. Especially now that you are reading this guide.

Typing Delta symbol in Word/Excel

In this section, I have shown you all the easy ways to insert the Delta symbol ( Δ) into Word.

NOTE: I demonstrate using the uppercase Delta symbol ( Δ). However, the same method can be used to insert any other symbol including the lowercase Delta symbol ( δ).

Below are the various ways to insert the Delta symbol into Word.

Delta symbol Alt code (Windows Only)

Every symbol in Word has a unique code which you can use to insert the symbol into your document. This code is popularly known as Alt code.

The Delta Symbol Alt code is 235 for lowercase delta and 30 for uppercase delta. To type this symbol using the alt code, hold down the Alt key whilst you type the alt code using the numeric keypad, then release the Alt key.

Aside using the alt code, you can also use the delta symbol unicode to insert it into Microsoft Word. The unicode method works only for Word.

The delta symbol unicode is 0394.

Below are the steps to type the Delta symbol on your keyboard (using the unicode):

Place the insertion pointer at where you want to insert the symbol.

Type the Alt code (0394)

Then press Alt+X to convert the code into a Delta symbol.

It is as simple as that.

As soon as you press Alt+X after typing the code, Word will convert those numbers into a Delta symbol.

Delta symbol Shortcut for Mac

For Mac users, the easiest way to insert the Delta symbol into MS Word is to use the keyboard shortcut.

The Delta Symbol shortcut for Mac is Option+J. To use this shortcut, press and hold the Option key whilst you press the letter J key once on your keyboard.

Copy and paste the Delta symbol

Inserting symbols into your document can be a simple copy and paste.

You can copy and paste it again if you have already inserted it into your document. Or you can copy it from elsewhere like a webpage. This works everywhere including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or even on the browser like Google Docs.

Below is the Delta symbol if you want to copy and paste it into your work:

Using Insert Symbol Dialog

This approach isn’t as straight forward as the previous methods. But it’s fairly simple.

And once you get the symbol into your document, you can always copy and paste it again as and when you need it.

Below are the steps to insert a Delta symbol in Word using the insert symbol dialog. The same process can be used for Excel and PowerPoint.

To easily find the Delta symbol in the dialog box, look at the bottom right area of the Symbol dialog box and select Unicode (hex) in the drop-down. Then look again at the top right area of the dialog and select Greek and Coptic in the drop-down.

This will filter out all the symbols including the Delta symbol you want to insert.

After inserting, close the Symbol dialog box.

This is how you may insert a Delta symbol in Word using the insert symbol dialog.

Using Word AutoCorrect to type Delta symbol

Another way to obtain the Delta symbol is through the AutoCorrect feature in Word.

It is a facility designed for correcting spelling mistakes like thsi to this.

Using this feature, you can assign a short code to the Delta symbol (such as DELTASYM).

This way, whenever you type the text DELTASYM, Word will think that you actually wanted to type Δ and will convert it into the Delta symbol automatically.

What makes this approach interesting is that you can assign any code you want to the symbol and Word will be more than glad to give it to you whenever you type the code.

Without further ado, below are the steps you can use to type Delta symbol in Word using AutoCorrect.

The Symbol dialog appears.

In the AutoCorrect dialog box, enter the following:

Word will automatically insert the Delta symbol into your document whenever you type DELTASYM.

However, below are some few things to note when you are using the AutoCorrect Method to insert the Delta sign.

AutoCorrect is case sensitive. Meaning if you type deltasym (in lowercase), Word will not convert it into the Delta symbol unless you type DELTASYM (in uppercase).

If there is any text before or after the AutoCorrect text, Word will consider the AutoCorrect text as part of the text and hence will not convert it to the Delta symbol. For example, XDELTASYM will not get converted, but X DELTASYM will get converted to X Δ.

Using the symbol typeface

There’s a typeface in Microsoft list of fonts called symbol.

This typeface is made up of a complete unaccented Greek alphabet and a selection of commonly used math symbols.

With this font, when you are typing in English Alphabets, they get converted to Greek alphabet.

Since the Delta symbol is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, typing the fourth letter (D) of the English alphabet will give you the Delta symbol.

D (in English) = Delta (Δ) (in Greek)

This means that if you highlight and apply the symbol typeface to the letter D, it’ll get converted to a delta symbol.

NOTE: Using the symbol typeface approach to insert Delta symbol should be considered only if you are preparing your document for print. Don’t use this method if it is for publishing online or to copy and paste into another document or software. Where you want to paste it may not recognize the symbol font and may paste the letter D instead of the Δ (Delta symbol)

How To Quickly Insert Delta Symbol Δ In Excel In A Cell

To know how to insert a delta symbol in Excel can be super useful for you.

Let me tell you why…

…while working with reports you can use it to present a specific type of values.

Agree?

Well, in simple words, a Delta (Δ) symbol can be use to present the difference between two values over a time of period.

So while working in Excel, if you calculate differences between values it’s better to use Delta symbol instead of using anything else like a specific word or something.

Now the thing is if you look at the Excel ribbon there is no direct way for you to insert it into a cell.

Top 7 Methods to Add Delta Symbol in Excel [Quickly]

Well, I have figured out that there are total 7 possible ways which we can use. So today in this post, I’d like to share with you these simple ways to insert a delta symbol in a cell in Excel.

It’s one of those Excel Tips and Tricks that can help to get better at Basic Excel Skills. So, let’s learn this thing.

1. Change the Font to Symbol to Get Delta

I found this way the quickest one to add a delta symbol and it’s pretty simple. All you have to do is:

First of all, enter “D” in the cell (Capital Letter) where you want to insert the symbol.

After that, change the font style to “Symbol” from the Home Tab Font Font Name.

This will instantly convert that “D” symbol into a delta.

But, one thing you need to take care that this will change the font style for the entire text from a cell.

2. Simply Insert Delta Symbol from Symbols Option

This is a simple way to insert any symbol you want to add in a cell.

All you need to do is, open symbol dialog box and search for the symbol and insert it. Here’s how to do it in steps.

First of all, select the cell where you want to add the symbol.

Then go to Insert Tab ➜ Symbols ➜ Symbol.

Now from insert symbol window, select “Greek and Coptic” and it will navigate you to the Greek symbols.

Pros: The benefit of this method is it’s simple and easy to insert.

Cons: It’s not dynamic and you need to do it again and again or copy paste the symbol into other cells.

3. Use CHAR Function to Get Delta Symbol in a Cell using a Formula

CHAR function can be used to insert a specific character by providing a code into the function. And, this can be used for Delta symbol as well and here’s how to do this.

In a cell, where you need to insert the symbol, enter below formula in the Excel’s formula bar.

After that, you need to change the font style of that cell to “Wingdings 3”.

Above two formulas add two different delta symbols, the first one inserts a white (outlined) symbol, on the other hand, the second one adds a black (filled).

Pros: As CHAR is a function and this formula gives you an option to choose between two different types of symbols.

Cons: If you want to add the symbol by concatenating it with some other formula it doesn’t work as you have changed the font style.

4. Use AutoCorrect Option to Automatically Add a Delta Symbol

This is another useful way to add a delta symbol.

In Excel, there is an option called Auto Correct which you can use to insert a symbol by typing a simple text.

All you need to do is specify a text which you use to enter in cell and then whenever you use that text Excel will convert that text into a symbol.

Here are the steps to do it.

First of all, copy this delta symbol from here or you can also do it by inserting the symbol from the symbol options.

After that, go to File Tab ➜ Options ➜ Proofing ➜ AutoCorrect ➜ Options.

Now in the AutoCorrect dialog box, in the “Replace with” input box enter “(dlt)” and in the “With” input box paste the delta symbol which you have copied.

Now whenever you type “(dlt)” in a cell Excel will convert that text into a delta symbol.

You can even use a different text from the text which we have used here.

Pros: It makes super easy to insert a symbol by entering a text. Just enter the text and Excel converts it into a symbol for you.

Cons: Again, this is not a dynamic method and if you need to add the symbol again you need to enter text again.

5. Apply Custom Formatting to Add a Delta Symbol with a Number or Percentage [My Favorite]

This one is the most awesome method and my favorite one.

Let’s say if you want to add a delta symbol with numbers in a cell then this is the best method.

When we use custom formatting, in that case, we just need to specify the format and Excel applies it to the cell without changing the values in the cell.

Follow these simple steps for this:

First of all, select the cell where you want to apply custom formatting with a delta symbol.

Once you apply this custom format it will show a delta sign with all the number in the cell.

In this method idea is simple, no matter which format you have just combined that format with a delta sign in the custom formatting category and you’ll get the symbol.

Look at below percentage format with a delta sign.

Pros: This is the best method in all the methods we have here because it doesn’t affect the values of the cell.

Cons: If you want to add a delta symbol to a cell for real then this method is not for you.

6. VBA Code to Insert Delta Symbol to Multiple Cells

And below we have this code:

Sub Macro1()

Dim rng As Range

For Each rng In Selection

rng.Value = rng.Value & ChrW(916)

Next rng

End Sub

To use this code, first of all, you need to enter it in VB editor (open it from developer tab).

And then, select the cell and run the code. If a cell has a value, it adds the symbol after that value.

If you have more than one cell then it will loop through all the cells one by one and insert the symbol.

Cons: When it adds a symbol to a cell and if that cell has a number or a percentage that becomes a text string after that and can’t be used further in calculations.

7. Copy and then Paste the Delta Symbol into the Cell

This is an unusual method but works if you need to insert a delta symbol in a cell for once.

The idea is simple copy the symbol from somewhere or you can it copy here Δ as well…

…and then simply paste it into the cell.

Conclusion

I believe the best way to add a delta symbol is custom formatting if you want to apply it to the numbers.

And if you just want to add it in heading cell or in a cell which you won’t use in calculation then you can use any one from other four.

6 Easy Ways To Insert The Delta Symbol (Δ) In Excel

When it comes to inserting symbols in Excel, things can get a bit complicated.

You either need to know the keyboard shortcut, or use the methods that are not very straightforward.

And there are a lot of symbols that many people need to insert regularly, such as the degree symbol, cent symbol, delta symbol, etc.

Note: In this tutorial, I have shown all the methods for the Greek Capital Letter Delta symbol (Δ). You can use the same methods for other delta symbols as well.

Insert Delta Symbol in Excel

In this tutorial, I will show you six easy ways to insert the delta symbol (Δ) in Excel (including a keyboard shortcut workaround).

The method you use will depend on the type of data you have.

So let’s get started!

Using the Keyboard Shortcut (Workaround)

Delta is a greek character and unfortunately, there is no shortcut in Excel to insert it.

But if you can work with the symbol shown below, you can use a keyboard shortcut.

The below symbol is a solid triangle (while a Delta is only a triangle with no filled color).

Below are the steps to insert the delta symbol (solid triangle/arrow symbol) in Excel using a keyboard shortcut:

Select the cell in which you want to insert the degree symbol.

Press F2 to get into the edit mode.

Use the keyboard shortcut – ALT + 30 (you need to hold the ALT key and then press 30 from the numeric keypad of your keyboard).

Note: This keyboard shortcut works only if you have a 10 keys numeric keypad in your keyboard. If you don’t have a numeric keypad, you need to enable the Num lock first and then use this keyboard shortcut.

Copy and Paste the Delta Symbol

A very fast and neat way to get the delta symbol in Excel is to copy it from another place.

It could be a delta symbol that you have already inserted in the worksheet or you can copy it from a webpage.

Below is the delta symbol that you can copy and paste in Excel.

Δ Changing the Font to Symbol

If you only need the delta symbol in a cell (which would have nothing else), you can change the font to achieve this.

Here are the steps to do this:

Enter D in a cell where you want the delta symbol.

Change the font to ‘Symbol’.

This will instantly change the cell content to a Delta symbol.

Note that this method is not suitable when you want to have additional text in the cell along with the delta symbol. Since this method changes the font of the entire cell, anything you enter in this cell will be converted to symbols.

Using the Insert Symbol Dialog Box

This is a slightly longer way to insert the delta symbol, but once you have it inserted at one place, you can just copy paste it to reuse it.

Here are the steps to insert the Delta symbol using the Insert Symbol dialog box:

In the Symbols dialogue box that opens, select the ‘Greek and Coptic’ as Font Subset.

Scroll down, find and select the delta symbol (you may have to spend some time spotting it among all the symbols).

This will insert the delta symbol in the selected cell.

Using the Excel AutoCorrect Feature

This method is my favorite.

Excel has a feature where it can autocorrect misspelled words automatically. There is already a pre-made list of corrections that Excel identifies and corrects for you.

We can use this feature to assign a code to the delta symbol (in this example, I am using DSYM as the code. You can use anything you want).

Now, whenever I enter the code in any cell, it will automatically be converted to the delta symbol.

Something as shown below:

Here are the steps to use autocorrect to insert the delta symbol:

In the Options dialogue box, select Proofing.

In the Autocorrect dialogue box, enter the following:

Replace: DSYM

With: Δ (you can copy and paste this)

Here are a few things you need to know when using the Autocorrect method:

This is case sensitive. So if you enter ‘dsym’, it will not get converted into the delta symbol. You need to enter DSYM.

This change also gets applied to all the other Microsoft applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, etc.). So be cautious and choose the keyword that you are highly unlikely to use in any other application.

If there is any text/number before/after DSYM, it will not be converted to the delta symbol. For example, DSYM38% will not get converted, however, DSYM 38% will get converted to Δ 38%

See Also:Use Autocorrect in Excel to Save Time. Specify a Custom Format (Use for Dashboards)

If you want to display the delta symbol before/after a number in a cell, you can specify a custom format to do this.

The benefit of this method is that it doesn’t change the content of the cells. For example, if a cell has 17 and you use this method to show Δ 17, the cell value would still be 17.

This method only changes the way the content of a cell is displayed and doesn’t change the content.

See the formula bar in the image below. While the cell shows the result with a delta sign, the cell still has the formula.

This technique can be useful when you’re creating dashboards, and don’t want to change the cell content.

Below are the steps to set the custom formatting to show the delta symbol:

Select the cells in which you want the delta symbol to be added.

Hold the Control Key and then press the ‘1’ key.

In the Format Cells dialog box, make select the ‘Number’ tab (if not selected already).

Select Custom from the options in the left pane.

In the Type field, use the following formatting: Δ General; Δ -General;

This will instantly change the format of the cell to display a delta symbol before the numbers.

Using custom formatting doesn’t change the value of the cell, only the way it’s displayed. You can use these numbers in calculations (just as if you never added the delta symbol in it).

Hope you found the tutorial useful.
