Dictionary in Java is the abstract class that is the parent of any class which uses the key-value pair relationship. In this blog, we will learn more about the Dictionary class in Java and get familiar with the different methods. Below are the topics covered in this blog-

What is Dictionary in Java?

Dictionary is an abstract class representing a key/value storage repository that operates like Map. You can store the value in a Dictionary object and once it is stored, you can retrieve it by using its key.

Methods of util.Dictionary Class 

Let us have a look at a few different methods of Dictionary Class.

Check the size of the dictionary

size() : java.util.Dictionary.size() returns the number of key-value pairs in the Dictionary

Syntax: public abstract int size()

Add/ put values in dictionary

put(K key, V value) : java.util.Dictionary.put(K key, V value) adds key-value pair to the dictionary

Syntax: public abstract V put(K key, V value)

Return values present in the dictionary

elements() : java.util.Dictionary.elements() returns value representation in dictionary

Syntax: public abstract Enumeration elements()

Get method to fetch the values mapped with the key

get(Object key) : java.util.Dictionary.get(Object key) returns the value that is mapped with the key in the dictionary

Syntax: public abstract V get(Object key)

Check if dictionary is empty

isEmpty() : java.util.Dictionary.isEmpty() checks whether the dictionary is empty or not.

Syntax: public abstract boolean isEmpty()

Return true, if there is no key-value relation in the dictionary; else return false.

Removing key value from dictionary in Java

remove(Object key) : java.util.Dictionary.remove(Object key) removes the key-value pair mapped with the key.

Syntax: public abstract V remove(Object key)

Preparing Your Pivot Table Data

Before you create a pivot table, make sure your data is organized correctly. There are instructions on the following pages, for setting up your source data in a table, organized into rows and columns.

Getting Started Use a Dynamic Data Source

In this example the source data contains information about property insurance policies. Each row has the details about one insurance policy, such as the region, state, construction type and the value of the insured property.

After your source data is prepared, you can create a pivot table. We’ll create a pivot table that shows the total insured value in each of the four regions where we sell insurance.

Select any cell in the source data table.

Adding Fields to the Pivot Table

An empty pivot table is created in your workbook, either on a new sheet, or the existing sheet that you selected. When you select a cell within the pivot table, a PivotTable Field List appears, at the right of the worksheet.

We want to see the total insured value in each of the four regions, so we’ll add the Region and InsuredValue fields to the pivot table.

In the PivotTable Field List, add a check mark to the Region field. The Region field is automatically added to the pivot table, in the Row Labels area.

Add a check mark to the InsuredValue field, and it will be automatically added to the Values area. You can now see the total insured value in each region.

Modifying the Pivot Table

After you’ve created a pivot table, you can add more fields, remove fields, or move the fields to a different location in the pivot table layout. We’ll remove the Region field, and add the Location field, to see the value of Rural policies compared to Urban.

The pivot table now shows the totals for Rural and Urban locations.

Test the Pivot Table

You can see a completed version of a pivot table based on the insurance policy data, with a few more fields added to the layout.

The pivot table demonstration is interactive, so you can use the Report Filters, at the top of the pivot table, to limit the amount of data that is being summarized.

How To Create A Microsoft Query In Excel (Excel Query) / 2023

Microsoft Query allows you use SQL directly in Microsoft Excel, treating Sheets as tables against which you can run Select statements with JOINs, UNIONs and more. Often Microsoft Query statements will be more efficient than Excel formulas or a VBA Macro. A Microsoft Query (aka MS Query, aka Excel Query) is in fact an SQL SELECT Statement. Excel as well as Access use Windows ACE.OLEDB or JET.OLEDB providers to run queries. Its an incredible often untapped tool underestimated by many users!

What can I do with MS Query?

Excel Files – you can extract data from External Excel files as well as run a SELECT query on your current Workbook

Access – you can extract data from Access Database files

MS SQL Server – you can extract data from Microsoft SQL Server Tables

CSV and Text – you can upload CSV or tabular Text files

Step by Step – Microsoft Query in Excel

In this step by step tutorial I will show you how to create an Microsoft Query to extract data from either you current Workbook or an external Excel file.

Open the MS Query (from Other Sources) wizard

Return Data to Microsoft Excel – this will return your query results to Excel and complete the Wizard

Just create a New VBA Module and paste the code above. You can run it hitting the CTRL+ SHIFT+ S Keyboardshortcut or Add the Macro to your Quick Access Toolbar.

Learning SQL with Excel

Creating MS Queries is one thing, but you need to have a pretty good grasp of the SQL language to be able to use it’s true potential. I recommend using a simple Excel database (like Northwind) and practicing various queries with JOINs.

, however, it doesn’t entirely invalidate Microsoft Queries. What is more, sometimes using Microsoft Queries is quicker and more convenient and here is why:

You can’t re-run Power Queries without the AddIn. While this obviously will be a less valid statement probably in a couple of years (in newer Excel versions), currently if you don’t have the AddIn you won’t be able to edit or re-run Queries created in Power Query

MS Query Cons: Microsoft Query falls short of the Power Query AddIn in some other aspects however:

Power Query has a more convenient user interface. While Power Queries are relatively easy to create, the MS Query Wizard is like a website from the 90’s

Power Query stacks operations on top of each other allowing more convenient changes. While an MS Query works or just doesn’t compile, the Power Query stacks each transform operation providing visibility into your Data Transformation task, and making it easier to add / remove operations

How To Create Multilevel Numbered Headings In Word 2022 / 2023

Over the last few months, we’ve reviewed Word’s numbered list features. Specifically, How to control spacing and alignment in a numbered list in Microsoft Word shows how to control spacing and alignment and How to number headings in a Word 2016 document shows a simple way to number headings. In this article, we’ll continue by reviewing Word’s Multilevel List feature. Fortunately, it’s easier to implement and modify than you might think.

I’m using Word 2016 on a Windows 10 64-bit system, but this feature is available in earlier versions. However, the multilevel list options discussed in this article aren’t available in the online 365 browser edition. For your convenience, you can download the demonstration .docx and .doc files, or you can work with your own content.

What doesn’t work

You can’t use Word’s Numbering feature to generate a multilevel numbering system, even if you use built-in heading styles. Figure A shows a document with two styled heading levels: Heading 1 and Heading 2. You can apply the Numbering option (in the Paragraph group) and Word will number the headings consequently, but the feature ignores different levels; if you expected 1, 1.1, 2, 2.1, and 2.2, you might be surprised. If you select the entire document first, Numbering not only ignores the different levels, but it also numbers the paragraphs!

Choose one of the built-in multilevel options from the gallery.

What’s important to note is that the List Library collection displays styles linked to the built-in heading styles. If one of these works for you, you needn’t go any further.

Tweak it

The default options are adequate most of the time, but you might want to customize the results a bit and that’s where things can get a bit confusing. The options are straightforward, but there are a lot of them; Word can handle up to nine levels!

Open this dialog to create a new multilevel list.

Now you’re ready to choose settings that will reflect your numbered heading needs:

Select the level you want to modify. You can change one, a few or all of the levels.

Select a numbering format to apply to the chosen level, adjust the formatting; adjust the spacing and aligning, and so on.

Repeat the above for each level you want to change.

An example

From the Number style for this level dropdown, choose I, II, III, (Figure E). We’re done with level 1.

Select level 2 and change the number style to l, ll, lll, as you did for level 1.

In the Aligned at control, enter .50. (Figure F).

We reset only a few options, but substantially changed the look of the headings.

Notice that the Font option (when you applied italics) changes only the number, not the heading text. To update the heading text, modify the heading style as you normally would. Word assumes you want all Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles included in the new numbering scheme. If you want to omit a heading level from the scheme, don’t use a built-in heading style to format those headings.

This feature is easiest to use when you combine it with Word’s built-in heading styles. However, you can map a custom heading style to the multilevel numbering feature–it just takes more work. Word handles nine levels, but any document with more than four levels should receive a serious developmental edit. More than four becomes confusing and perhaps worse, unreadable.
