Learn how to add animation in PowerPoint 2007, 2003, and 2002 for Windows

We explained what animation is, and what guidelines you need to follow before you add an animation to a slide object in PowerPoint. You can add animation to any slide object in PowerPoint — including text, charts, shapes, pictures, clip art, etc.
Follow these steps to add animation to a shape in PowerPoint:
Open a new presentation, and insert a slide object such as a shapes or a picture, etc. Or open any existing presentation you have, and select the slide object (see Figure 1).

This opens a fly-out menu that lets you select any of the four animation types that PowerPoint provides. For this tutorial, we chose the Entrance option, which opens another fly-out menu that you can see inFigure 4.

By default, the recently used animation effects are visible in the Entrance fly-out menu. To see all the effects available, choose theMore Effect option from the fly-out menu, which opens a dialog box, as shown inFigure 5. This contains all the animation effects available in PowerPoint for the selectedanimation type.

You can add animation types other than Entrance in the same way. Just choose the relevant fly-out menu as required for Emphasis, Exit, and Motion Path animations.
Note: PowerPoint uses the term Custom Animation for animation added to slide objects. For most practical purposes, the terms “custom animation” and “animation” can be regarded the same.
Tip: If your slide has more than one slide object, you can also add animation effects for all of them using the same process. Remember that any animation added first will play first, and any animations added thereafter will play in the same sequence as you added them. Now that you have added an animation to a slide object, you can control more animation properties like event and speed.

Reorder animations: Select the animation, and use arrows in Animation Pane to move animation up or down the list.
This article explains how to add custom animations to presentations in PowerPoint 2010 and later, and Microsoft 365. Animation effects are a great way to make bullet points, titles, graphics, and pictures stand out.
Apply Multiple Animation Effects
Add multiple animation effects to any object on a PowerPoint slide. Make images fly in, teeter, and fade out. Make words type onto the screen. Create bullet lists that change color as you cover each point and become transparent when you move to the next point. Use your imagination.
To apply multiple animation effects to an object:
Select Add Animation.
Select an animation from one of the different types of effects, such as Entrance, Emphasis, Exit, or Motion Path.
Select Add Animation again and select another animation effect.
Continue adding animations this way to create the custom animation you desire.
If you select an animation from the Animation group, it replaces the first animation effect rather than applying additional animation effects.
Modify an Animation Effect
After you’ve added multiple animations to an object, change the way the animations appear on the slide.
To modify how an animation acts:
Select Animation Pane. The Animation Pane opens on the right side of the window.
Select the down arrow next to the effect you want to modify. From here, change when the animation starts, the effect options, and the timing.
To change when the animation will start, select one of the following:
Start With Previous: Start the animation at the same time as the previous animation (could be another animation on this slide or the slide transition of this slide).
Start After Previous: Starts the animation when the previous animation or transition has finished.
Select Effect Options to choose custom options, such as sounds and direction.
Select Timing to choose custom timing settings, such as delay, duration, or repeat.
Modify the options for each effect that you have applied to the object.
Re-Order Custom Animation Effects
After applying more than one animation to an object, you may want to re-order the animations.
To change the order of animations:
Select the animation.
Use the arrows at the top of the Animation Pane to move the animation up or down in the list.
Apply a Motion Path Animation
Motion path animation effects allow you to move an object across the slide. Customize these effects as needed.
To create a motion path:
Select the object you want to animate.
In the Animation Gallery, scroll down to Motion Paths at the bottom of the list and choose the motion path you want to use. Choose from Lines, Arcs, Turns, Shapes, and Loops.
To make your own motion path, choose Custom Path. Then, drag to draw the motion path. Press Esc when you’re finished.
Select Effect Options to add custom options to the motion path animation. Choose to change the motion direction or edit the points in the path.

Introducing the Ribbon
The Ribbon along with its tabs continues its presence (from PowerPoint 2007) in the Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 interface. The Ribbon replaces all the menus and toolbars that were found in PowerPoint 2003 and older versions, although there’s still one menu as part of the File Menu and Backstage View, and one toolbar called the Quick Access Toolbar. All the other options are now found in the tabs of the Ribbon.
Note: Microsoft calls this new interface Fluent, that’s good to know because it sounds impressive!
The Ribbon is essentially a long strip that’s fixed in size (see Figure 1) so that you cannot change its width or height. The Ribbon includes several tabs, and each tab is named as you can see in Figure 1.

Tip – If you want more screen estate for a while, you can quickly hide the entire Ribbon with all the tabs by pressing Ctrl + F1, press Ctrl + F1 again to bring back the Ribbon.
The Ribbon contains many interface elements:
Tabs: Ribbon consists of fixed tabs such as Home, Insert, Design, etc. Each tab contains sets of tools to create and edit presentations. By default, the Developer tab is not visible in the Ribbon although you can enable it yourself.
Contextual Tabs are special tabs in the Ribbon that are not visible all the time, they only make an appearance when you are working with a particular slide object which can be edited using special options.Figure 2 shows the Drawing Tools Format tab which is only activated when a shape or another drawing object is selected on the slide.
Group: A group of related tools within a tab is known as a Group. Figure 3 shows the Shape Styles group within theDrawing Tools Format tab.
The More button expands a gallery within a Ribbon tab so that all or more options can be seen.Figure 5 shows you the More Button in the bottom right (highlighted). The two arrow buttons above theMore Button are used to scroll inside the gallery without expanding it (or even after expanding it if the gallery has too many options).

Explore the Merge Shape commands in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows. These commands allow you to create your own shapes in PowerPoint easily.
For many users, the Merge Shape commands may be assumed as a new feature in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows. However, these were available in PowerPoint 2010 for Windows through the Combine Shapes commands. Yes, these were not available by default from any of the Ribbon tabs in PowerPoint 2010, but you could customize the QAT to get these commands. In PowerPoint 2013, Microsoft gave the new Merge Shapes name to these commands and also gave them a place right within the Ribbon. And now, these commands are no longer limited to shapes as they also work with text and pictures.
Accessing the Merge Shape Commands
To access the Merge Shape commands you first need to insert some shapes on your PowerPoint slide. In this example, we inserted a Rectangle and a Circle. Make sure you place the shapes in a way so that they overlap each other, as shown in Figure 1.
